Emoticons are representations of a writer’s moods or facial expressions, often in the form of icons. Originally crafted from ASCII art, emoticons evolved to include Shift JIS art and Unicode art. More recently, graphical icons, both static and animated, have complemented the traditional text-based emoticons, commonly referred to as emoji.

Emoticons can be categorized into three main groups: Western or horizontal (predominantly from the United States and Europe), Eastern or vertical (mainly from East Asia), and 2channel style (initially used on 2channel and other Japanese message boards). The distinction between these styles often reflects cultural differences in how facial expressions are perceived. In the East, emphasis is placed on the eyes for conveying emotions, while in the West, the entire face is typically involved.
